21 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA- June 12 Celebration

Happy Democracy Day

Nigerians are most grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari, the leader of the nation for shifting the date that marks the celebration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day from May 29th to June 12th. President Muhammadu Buhari made this declaration in the year 2019 following his re-election into office as the President.

June 12 is significant in Nigeria as it marks the remembrance of the free and fair election held on June 12 1993 which was annulled. The nullification of the June 12 elections became the pivotal issue in all political discuss ever since. This day makes it exactly 27 years when Nigerians came out in mass to vote the candidate of their choice as the President of the nation and this created the preference of this day to celebrate becoming a Democratic nation.

Nigeria began her journey into a full Democratic System of government on the 29th of May 1999 and every four years since that date, the people are being given an opportunity to vote any candidate of their choice to become leaders in the different arms of government, in different capacities and at different levels of governance in the country.

The fact however remains that the past 21 years of Democracy in Nigeria has not fully satisfied its purpose; which includes among many others, the will of the people being respected and patriotic leaders being elected. Nigerians however has a major cause for celebration owning to the fact that her Democracy has not experienced any form of disruption for the past 21 years.

June 12th being the new Democracy Day in Nigeria was declared by President Buhari in order to honour Nigerians who for Democracy in the nation suffered and some lost their lives in the struggle. Democracy Day is a day to remember and to remind both the populace and those in government about the importance of this system of government. Hence, today the various purposes of democracy must be the focus, these purposes include, free and fair elections, an enabling environment for the populace, citizens gaining access to proper welfare and the protection and promotion of human rights in all regards.
