The Environment has quietly suffered the effects of many wars and armed conflicts in times and has led to pollution of food crops, water wells, it has also destroyed forests and killed animals. The environment despite suffering these exploitations has been neglected at the end of the wars, this is the reason the United Nations chose the 6th of November as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict.
The United Nations General Assembly created the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict so as to reveal that victims of wars and armed conflicts are not just humans but also the environment with natural resources like diamonds, gold, oil, timber and other scarce resources at the receiving end of the exploitation.
Great Significance is attached to this day because the preservation of the environment will help keep humanity in continued existence. Healthy ecosystems will help in reducing the risks of armed conflicts and properly managed natural resources will also help the economy of the world to keep on growing.
Peace and Conflict Resolution Resource Centre (PEACrEc) recognizes the importance of the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. We urge Governments and Stakeholders to take proper action in preserving the environment as part of peacekeeping and peacebuilding policies because peace will be assured if natural resources are maintained.
