1ST OCTOBER: INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR OLDER PERSONS
Older persons from 60 years and above are of great significance to the world; they contribute immensely to society as being leaders, they are custodians of traditions and they also act as caretakers. It is in view of this importance that the United Nations declared the 1st of October as the International Day for Older Persons.
The International Day for Older Persons is a day with the purpose of elaborately highlighting the important contributions of older persons to our world. It is also a day set apart to draw the attention of the society and the world at large to the various challenges and opportunities that are associated with ageing.
Older persons are part of the people who are vulnerable in society. Many of them experience poverty as they may not be able to fend for themselves or even meet their important needs. They are also faced with different types of health challenges of which they have to manage with for the rest of their lives. However, as healthcare improves, older persons are increasing in population.
Peace and Conflict Resolution Resource Centre (PEACrEc) celebrates all Older Persons on this International Day. We implore all Governments, Individuals and Stakeholders to set strategies to take proper care of Older Persons especially in the aspect of healthcare. PEACrEc believes that protecting older persons will help build a peaceful society for all.
