AUGUST 30TH: International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances
Involuntary or Enforced disappearance is one of the many terrible acts perpetrated in different parts of the world today; it has placed many individuals and families in a state of sorrow and grief. The United Nations General Assembly thereby chose August 30th every year as a day to create awareness to put an end to this act.
The sudden disappearance of persons happens from time to time in different countries all over the world and most times, these people go missing and some are still yet to be found. Families, Relatives and friends of the victims of enforced disappearances experience the grief of not knowing when they will return every day.
Many who have suffered and are still suffering from enforced disappearances include human rights activists, witnesses of disappearances, relatives of the victims, legal practitioners handling the case of disappearances. It has become known that terrorist groups are majorly involved in enforcing disappearances.
Enforced Disappearances can also be as a result of illegal arrests, detention and abduction of persons. The purpose of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is to ensure that an end comes to this heinous act.
On this International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, Peace and Conflict Resolution Resource Centre condemn this evil act and we request that the Government and various Stakeholders should help in rescuing those who have disappeared involuntarily and to also defend the vulnerable so that our Nations can enjoy Peace in all ramifications.
