Pan-Atlantic University Holds Strategic PR and Media Writing Workshop for Military/Para-Military PROs

The School of Media and Communication (SMC), Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, in collaboration with Synthesis Communications - a bespoke Lagos based strategic PR Consultancy and the Peace and Conflict Resolution Resource Centre (PEACREC) is set to revolutionise PR practices among the military and para-military security PROs, as they plan to host them to a unique PR and Media Writing Workshop. The 3-Day Workshop is billed for Wednesday, June 19 – Friday, June 21, 2019, at the University’s Ibeju-Lekki Main Campus.

According to a statement by the organisers, the University has selected some of her best faculty to facilitate this workshop. They will be led by one of Nigeria’s finest in the field of communication, a professor of Language and Communication, Prof. Emevwo Biakolo. Other industry practitioners, with outstanding track records in PR practice, are also aligned to be part of the facilitators; as the workshop is aimed to be both theoretical and practical, with emphasis on the hands-on aspect of the training.

The statement explained that the workshop is targeted at the communications team of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police Force, The Nigerian Civil Defense Corp, The Nigerian Customs Service, The Nigerian Immigration Service, The Department of State Security (DSS), The National Intelligence Agency (NIA), The Nigerian Fire Service, The Nigerian Prisons, The Office of The National Security Adviser (ONSA). Included are agencies such as EFCC, ICPC, NDLEA, NIMET, FAAN, NIMASA, NAFDAC, SON and many others.

The core objective of the workshop is to equip the Public Relations Officers (PROS) of these agencies with powerful and impact-based knowledge in critical areas of effective and empathetic public communication. To achieve this, the workshop will delve into writing mechanics, advanced writing – press releases, features, documentary writing, speech writing etc. It will also feature the mechanics of storytelling, media literacy, the menace of fake news and how to identify, counter and neutralise them.

Furthermore, the organizers recognize that no one can effectively communicate an institution or brand that one does not understand its essence and value propositions. To ensure that the PROs live the brand and communicate it persuasively, the workshop will take participants through the rudiments of branding and brand communication. In these sessions, participants would know what brand and branding entail. They will also be taken through building the brand architecture, the Iceberg Metaphor, living the brand, brand communication, blogging, twitting and others. Digital PR media communication is also included in the packed workshop module where understanding the rapidly changing media landscape and the environment will form a critical part.

This will understandably dovetail into understanding the digital media landscape. Social media/online news writing and distribution, social media space and the globalization of information dissemination amongst others would be effectively tackled at the workshop and the requisite skill passed to participants.

Since the Military and para-Military Agencies in Nigeria require good relations with the public to function effectively in serving the citizens, this workshop is more apt than ever. This is against the backdrop of the recent negative relationship between the security agencies and the public which is heightened by perception issues that need to be urgently addressed.

This calls for the use of PR strategies and tactics to engage the public and win their understanding, empathy and goodwill. PR involves the creative and strategic creation of productive relationships between a person, organization or institution with her stake-holding publics in a manner that promotes understanding and goodwill. The base of PR practice is writing and speaking. The art of writing is a skill worthy of acquisition. Writing skill is acquired through painstaking learning and practice.

Following the paucity of skilled writers in the face of high demand, even within the Nigerian security agencies, the Workshop with Military and para-Military PROs and Executive is therefore auspicious and timely.
