JUNE 7TH: WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY
Food is an essential part of human existence; it provides nutrients, vitamins and energy needed for daily activities and can also bring harm to the body if not properly taken care of, hence, the United Nations chose the 7th of June as a day for the awareness of Food Safety.
The World Food Safety Day is a day set aside by the United Nations to create awareness for food safety globally and this starts from the process of production to harvest, processing, storage, distribution, preparation and finally to consumption.
Research has shown over the years that lack of food safety can cause hazards to the health of people as these foods contain microorganisms, bacteria, viruses that cause various illnesses like typhoid, cholera, dysentery etc and can also lead to death.
The theme for the 2019 World Food Safety Day is Food Safety, Everyone’s Business. This theme is to sensitize the world that everyone needs to be involved in ensuring food safety right from the point of production until it is consumed and enters the body system.
Food safety can be achieved by detecting, managing and preventing foodborne risks as doing this will bring about safer health for people, better agricultural production, economic boost, good tourism and so many other benefits.
Peace & Conflict Resolution Resource Centre (PEACrEc) joins the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO) to spur regulatory bodies into action for stronger food safety policies to be made and also to the entire Nigerian populace to improve food safety today.
