15th September: International Day of Democracy

Former United States President, Late Abraham Lincoln defined Democracy as the Government of the people, by the people and for the people; it is on this premise that the United Nations chose the 15th of September every year as the International Day of Democracy.

The International Day of Democracy is a day that reminds us of the great impact of this system of government on the nations of the world where it is practised today. Democracy is embedded with a lot of benefits for people of different classes as it encourages the protection of their rights, giving an opportunity to both the privileged and the less privileged.

The theme for the International Day of Democracy 2019 is PARTICIPATION. The theme is structured to reinstate the real purpose of the System of Government called Democracy which is the PEOPLE. It is fundamentally expressed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states that; "the will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government".

Democracy has brought about changes in human governance as it inspired constitution-making, it has helped in the promotion and the protection of human rights, it has given the privileges for participation and equal treatment of persons in decision making at different levels.
