On the 26th of November 2007, the United Nations General Assembly made a declaration that instituted February 20th annually as World Day of Social Justice; this declaration came as an outcome of researches that have revealed the several challenges confronting people henceforth hindering strong social dimension to globalization.
Among societies all over the world, there have been significant obstacles to full involvement in the global economy, especially in developing countries due to the several challenges that range from poverty, insecurity, financial crises, exclusion and inequality and so on. The United Nations General Assembly recognizes that social justice and social development are obligatory.
World Day of Social Justice for the year 2020 has been given the theme: “Closing the Inequalities Gap to Achieve Social Justice”, this theme expresses one of the major aims of social justice which is to put an end to the barriers people face especially in the areas of gender, ethnicity, age, race and disability. Social Justice seeks to promote gender equality and protect the rights of indigenous people and migrants.
Peace and Conflict Resolution Resource Centre (PEACrEc) on this World Day of Social Justice declare our absolute allegiance to social justice. We use this opportunity to call on leaders especially those of developing countries to implement strategies that will promote social development because this is one of the surest ways to ensure a peaceful and secure society for all.
